Oral health research responds to dental practice

Private practice dentists are shaping the oral health research agenda with their questions, the top official of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research told a town hall meeting April 25.

“NIDCR takes those questions that are most important and pivotal for dental practitioners in their everyday encounters with patients and brings them together to work as part of a dental practice research network, where the questions are often generated by the dentists themselves,” said Dr. Isabel Garcia, the dental institute’s acting director.

FDA takes another look at mercury-based dental fillings

Although there are no new data on the safety of mercury alloy dental fillings, the Food & Drug Administration wants to know whether the methods used to ascertain their safety were adequate.

Last year the Food & Drug Administration ruled that the mercury-containing metal in dental fillings is safe, but the agency wants to know if the methods it used to determine the alloy's safety were satisfactory.
The FDA is holding a public meeting today and tomorrow on the issue, focusing on the risk of the dental amalgam for children and pregnant women.

Filling Without Drilling

Latest news in dentistry

Filling Without Drilling: Pain-Free Way of Tackling Dental Decay Reverses Acid Damage and Re-Builds Teeth

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2011) Researchers at the University of Leeds have discovered a pain-free way of tackling dental decay that reverses the damage of acid attack and re-builds teeth as new. The pioneering treatment promises to transform the approach to filling teeth forever. Tooth decay begins when acid produced by bacteria in plaque dissolves the mineral in the teeth, causing microscopic holes or 'pores' to form. As the decay process progresses these micro-pores increase in size and number. Eventually the damaged tooth may have to be drilled and filled to prevent toothache, or even removed. The very thought of drilling puts many people off going to see their dentist, whether or not they actually need treatment. This tendency to miss check-ups and ignore niggling aches and pains means that existing problems get worse and early signs of decay in other teeth are overlooked.

Five Dental Trends

The face of dentistry changes each year, and 2011 will be no different. Here are the top five dental trends for 2011, brought to you by the editors of Consumer Guide to Dentistry:

1. Smile Makeovers Meet Botox and Injectables. Soon you may be visiting your dentist every few months for more than just routine cleanings and follow-ups, especially if your dentist uses dermal fillers and Botox as part of overall smile makeover procedures. Because dentists are experts in smile and facial esthetics, many are going the extra mile to offer facial injectable fillers in order to provide patients with the most comprehensive anti-aging and rejuvenation experience possible.

Identifying Risk Factors for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

The Austin dentists of Bridgeview Dental have examined the results of a study conducted by researchers at the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, which recently released the results of a long-term study to identify risk factors for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD), a painful condition affecting the joint which connects the jaw to the skull. The results of the study reveal that those who suffer from TMJD may be more likely to suffer from a range of other issues as well, including hearing disorders such as tinnitus, fainting and dizziness, and seizures. By identifying these associated conditions, researchers hope to be able to more accurately identify those at risk of TMJD.

The health risks of gum disease

Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter, explains: “The link between oral health and overall body health is well documented and backed by robust scientific evidence. Despite this, only one in six people realise that people with gum disease may have an increased risk of strokes or diabetes. And only one in three are aware of the heart disease link.”

Gum Disease Linked to Pancreatic Cancer

A new study from Harvard has linked gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, to pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer has been named as the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. According to the Harvard School of Public Health , more than 30,000 Americans are expected to lose their lives to pancreatic cancer this year.

While there have been many studies documenting the link between poor oral hygiene and other medical problems, such as heart disease and stroke, this is the first study to find a solid link that gum disease could actually increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.

"Smart bomb" mouthwash aims to end tooth decay: Will it work?

Dentists are smiling over a new report that UCLA researchers have developed a new mouthwash that might make dental cavities go the way of the dodo bird, CBS Los Angeles reported.
For the study - published in the Nov. issue of the journal Carries Research - researchers tested the new mouthwash on 12 patients. After only one rinse, the mouthwash completely eliminated the S. mutans bacteria - the main cause of tooth decay. The patients were S. mutans-free for the entire four-day duration of the study.

How Cavity-Causing Microbes Invade Heart

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2011) — Scientists have discovered the tool that bacteria normally found in our mouths use to invade heart tissue, causing a dangerous and sometimes lethal infection of the heart known as endocarditis. The work raises the possibility of creating a screening tool -- perhaps a swab of the cheek, or a spit test -- to gauge a dental patient's vulnerability to the condition.

Dental Visits May Provide Health Benefits Beyond Your Teeth

Regular dental visits may do more than keep your chompers shiny. New research suggests that getting your teeth professionally cleaned and scraped or "scaled" just once may help reduce the risk for heart attack and stroke.

Researchers looked at more than 100,000 adults in the Taiwan national health insurance database -- half of whom had never had their teeth scaled and half of whom had.
